The exam
Ø Arrive at least 15 minutes early for your exam, but don’t panic if you can’t!
Ø Make sure you have everything you need – pens, pencils, calculator etc.
Ø Read the instructions before you start.
Ø Read through the paper before you start and decide which questions you will answer first. Remember that you don’t have to do the questions in any particular order – it is best to do the ones you are confident about first.
Ø Look at the marks for each question. This gives you an idea about how much work is expected from you.
Ø Look for key words. For example, “calculate” means that a diagram will not be OK!
Ø Always read the question at least twice to make sure that you are doing what you should be doing!
Ø Link the steps in your answer with sentences describing briefly what you are doing.
Ø Try to plan your answers.
Ø Keep all answers relevant and to the point.
Ø Use a neat and well-labelled diagram if it will help in your answer.
Ø Use correct units where applicable.
Ø Work to a reasonable accuracy – if the question doesn’t specify an accuracy, three significant figures is usually OK.
Ø If a graph is needed, label the axes, make sure the points are clear, use a sharp pencil and give the graph a title.
Ø Don't forget to turn the page over!
Ø Check your answers.
Ø Hand everything in – including rough work. You can pick up marks for all the work you have done.
